Egypt Joins Turkey’s Call to Halt Arms Shipments to Israel
Egypt led the way in Arab-Israeli peace efforts, signing a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. Jordan followed suit in 1994. More recently, the 2020 Abraham Accords, brokered by the United States, saw the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco establish diplomatic relations with Israel. However, tensions have risen again due to the Gaza crisis.
Egypt, joining forces with Turkey and dozens of other nations, called on the UN to halt arms shipments to Israel.
The country’s concern centers on the potential misuse of the supplied weapons in the ongoing conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
This move is part of international efforts to pressure Israel into complying with international law and humanitarian law, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated. The call aims to protect civilians and stop what Egypt considers to be “Israeli violations” against Palestinians.
On Monday, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, labeled Turkey as “malice” for spearheading the initiative, which was signed by 52 countries.
